Ex. Credit Blog 1

Going home for the holidays is something that I want to come faster than the time is now. I have long been awaiting the trip back to Pennsylvania for Christmas. I get to see the snow covered landscape, the mountain side with frozen mini-waterfalls, and the many deer that roam around. The main part I want to go back is so I can break out the snowboard. It has been 12 months that I have not snow-boarded due to school. Doesn’t that just suck. But family and all will be there so I am counting down the minutes.

On Norriswood and Watagua, the two main streets that I use daily have been blocked off completely due to the repaving of the roads. What I don’t understand is that why they close off all the streets in order to only be able to work on one road at a time. Well speaking of which, I almost got my car towed this morning because last night, our backyard, which can fit about 9 cars in it was completely fool, so I parked at my sister’s house on watagua. Well turns out that they were doing both streets so I get a call from my sister stating they were about to tow my car. So just rising out of bed, I run over there in some gym shorts and a undershirt and flip-flops. Can you say freezing. It was just a sudden surprise so I did not think of it.

Ch 15 Poem Reflections

This is Just to Say: William C. Williams

When you first go to look at the poem you wonder if it is really a poem only being 12 lines long. The poem itself seems as though it was a hot summer day and a child dug in for a cold treat in this case a plum. He ate the plum and then was confronted by someone in which he apologized for eating it. I love the poem because of its length. It just doesn’t seem to be at an upper education level to be assigned. But the poem was short and sweet.

Silence: Marianne Moore

The poem is a little tricky to comprehend, but to what I think I understand, he is talking about how silence can prove how good a man/woman you really are. It can choose those who are high in self-respect in themselves, and those who care about what they look like all the time. It just goes to show you the whole reason for silence, whether it is to describe your personality or your self-dignity.

Down Wanton Down: Robert Graves

I researched a little into the poem and discovered some very good answers to summarize the poem since I did not fluently understand. But, the poem is basically about the physical being of a true man. The poem is based within a man, and the conflicts that haunt him. He believes himself to be superior and that nothing can bring him down. Wanton refers to his behavior from old English text, meaning irate in some cases. The poem at first, I thought it was going to be about a dog. But that changed.

Batter My Heart: John Donne

During the first couple stanzas it sounds as if he is praying to God or to something. Now he is praying the God will come in him with force, blow him down etc… Then it continues by stating how he was now imprisoned by the devil just as if a town is imprisoned by an invader. This could also possibly mean that he has betrayed God and turned to Satan for help. Near the end he discovers his wife has left and decides to turn back to God to try to help him. This poem I kind of liked. The ending was a little bad but overall good poem.

Aftermath: Henry Longfellow

The poem is obviously talking about a big event that had happened in the area, not necessarily a good event. Maybe a war or a massacre of some sort. The aftermath can resemble some of the good that comes about the land possibly the new creatures that make it home or the grass that covers up the blood pools. The aftermath is what makes old things look new but memory can never be altered.

Friend…Thomas Moore lies Dead: J.V. Cunningham

This poem is the shortest poem I have ever seen. I do not know if the body has a severed head or if he is being sarcastic saying his friend never went down without a fight, but, the whole purpose of it was not to explain an event of any sort, but to maybe create a joke. I don’t know. Its difficult to understand and two sentence long poem.

End of Semester Stress?

This week has been filled with stress; all eighteen hours are just pounding down now. I was just thinking, why is it that as the semester comes near its end, why do professors create new work that is hard to do? This winter break is one that will be well needed and well deserved. With only two days left before the week of finals, everyone is pretty much struggling to finish all the last minute things so that the week of finals can be less stressful. So, I was just thinking about that over the weekend.

5th Outside Event

After class on Thursday, I was frantically trying to find a fifth outside event, I started branching out to some fellow students and roommates. I got some insight to a coffee bar similar to Otherlands Coffee Bar; it’s called Java Cabana Coffee Bar. Believe it or not, it is on the same street, Cooper Young that is. The coffee bar has open mic nights on Thursdays. My roommates/friends went up there to check it out, it had plenty of amateur poets and writers. But once again it was very interesting just because of the atmosphere of being in a coffee shop but it also being related to English in an odd way. Some of the poems were hard to get the meaning of because they sounded like they just made up some random ideas that seemed to rhyme, and some that just sounded like straight up sentences jumbled into poems. But one of the stories that was read really was interesting. About the writers life as a child and how some of the troubles he faced transformed into how he was today. The whole idea of going to outside events still has not hit me yet, but this was a lot better than the Otherlands reading just because it was not “gay” at all. That reading still makes me wonder why I stayed. J. So, this is my fifth outside event. And how I thought about it.

Steeler Game Sunday ii2

This weekend i could not believe the loss that the steelers had brought upon Pittsburgh. Of all the teams to lose to, we lose to Kansas City Chiefs. See to put it into simpler terms, the Steelers were 6-3 while the Chiefs were 2-5. Now that record is horrible. Not to mention though that the main quarterback, Ben Roeslithberger, was taken out in the fourth quarter due to an injury. This was more than likely what resulted in the chiefs coming back two touchdowns to win it in overtime. This just ruined my Sunday afternoon, not to mention having to drive anywhere and finish up schoolwork that was due.

Coffee Bar Reading

Wednesday night I had gone to the Otherlands Coffee Bar poetry reading. Well let us just say it was different. The female reader was not very loud so I could not hear exactly what she was reading. But with the male reader, he expressed his thoughts very vividly. The reading was really awkward since it was talking of what it sounded to be like a real life experience of his life with a guy friend. It talked about how he once got into drugs and how they affected the life of him and his friend. Eventually if I heard correctly his friend had killed himself, although I cannot remember exactly how. But the aura that the coffee bar gave was one that made the reading a somewhat interesting event. Would I return and go to another reading? Well I might return once more and if I experience the same type of reading probably not. It was just not my source of fun that I enjoy.
